Report: Your Voice! A Masterclass by Floor Jansen

[ENGLISH VERSION BELOW]

I volunteer, I volunteer, I volunteer as a tribute!
“Because it’s the first song that you totally do with Nightwish”.

Text and Pictures by Silvia Blackstar Bavaglia, for Nightwishers

My trip began at 6.30 with my train from Milan to Rome. When I got there I met the members of the italian fanclub: Lenny, Lorenzo and Mario. We went together to the Mississippi Music School, downtown in Rome. Our fantastic masterclass with Floor was about to begin

She arrived and waved us, she was sorry for being a little late (she had issues with taxi and a guided tour around Vatican). We entered the classroom to begin the first lesson, the one for principiant pupils. We ladies sat down (we were all girls), all super-excited and nervous about singing with her.

She firstly explained us show the lesson was planned: we were to do some exercises to learn how to sing with our diaphragm; the air need to flow slowly from the stomach to sing, and not from lungs. She told us to imagine someone punching our tummy. It should help to get air, voice and energy out. This is only an example because she really explained a lot of interesting things, and I couldn’t write them all otherwise I would write a three-book saga!

We slowly began feeling at ease, Floor made us laugh and this helped a lot.

A funny moment was when  she told us to be relaxed, not only with our body but also with our face. So she pulled her cheeks and she looked like Munch’s Scream

Then we began with practical exercise, with melodic scales and breathing

The last part of the lesson was the most interesting: we could sing a chosen song.

We were anxious again! Floor asked if someone wanted to volunteer as first singer.

I imagined myself as Katniss Everdeen at Hunger Games, ‘’I volunteer as a tribute!!’’

I calmy raised my hand saying that I wanted to try.

Floor replied that it was good because she was there to learn.

I was about to connect my phone to the hi-fi but Elan’s instrumental blasted at high level and everyone laughed.

Floor wanted to know why I chose that particular song. I had so much to say because it is a joyous hymn and it makes me happy, it reflect my essence…. But I only said ‘’it is your first NW song!” So lame! Shame on me!

Singing in front of her made me really nervous. I felt my voice disappear and my body tremble.

She has been super nice and patient: she explained me my mistakes and gave me advice, to better my singing.  I should use my voice more soflty.

She showed me how to do this by placing my finger behind my incisives: doing so I could only open my mouth the lenght of my index finger, and I could relax the muscles of my face.

But it wasn’t easy for me, because I was looking in her eyes and I was singing her song!

It went good nevertheless, I need to focus on relaxation.

This part has been useful also when other girls sang because everyone has a different style and everyone can learn something. Doing a class all together helped us learning something new!

At the end of the masterclass we had time to take pictures and we had CDs and stuff autographed, many of us had presents and gifts for Floor.

Our teacher has been very nice and kind with everybody. She was happy when I gave her the vegan cappuccino plumcake I baked for her.
