Recensione: Pyre of the Black Heart- Marko

Quando parliamo di un periodo di hiatus di una band, non significa che i membri del gruppo stiano con le mani in mano. Una band come i Nightwish, sempre pieni di idee e progetti, non sono da meno, anzi.
Terminato il Decades World Tour, alcuni dei ragazzi hanno intrapreso almeno un progetto parallelo. Tuomas e Troy, insieme a Johanna Kurkela, hanno fondato Auri, Floor si è dedicata alla televisione con Beste Zangers, ottenendo grandi consensi nella sua patria natale, permettendole di organizzare il suo primo tour solista.
Tuttavia ciò che ha destato l’interesse dei fan è stato sicuramente Marco, che ha esordito come solista dopo più di 30 anni di carriera.
Il curriculum del nostro bassista e vocalist preferito è molto vasto: Tarot, Nightwish e collaborazioni con Delain, Northern Kings, Raskasta Joulua, Ayreon e molti altri sono solo alcune delle stelle nel firmamento hietalico.
Adesso però basta. È giunto il momento che sia Marco ad essere il Sole. La prima cosa da fare è sbarazzarsi di quella C nel nome. Bisogna essere fedeli a se stessi, pertanto il vocalist si presenta al pubblico con il suo nome di battesimo: Marko Hietala. Nasce così Mustan Sydämen Rovio, 10 brani inediti completamente in lingua finlandese, anticipati dal singolo Isäni Ääni. L’album vede la luce a maggio 2019 tramite la casa discografica Savonian Rooster.
Il disco ottiene ottimi consensi e Marc… scusate, MARKO e la sua band si dedicano ad un piccolo tour in Finlandia.
Ma è proprio alla fine di questo tour che arriva la svolta: dal 2020 l’album sarà disponibile anche in versione inglese, sotto il titolo di Pyre Of The Black Heart.
È proprio di questa versione di cui vorrei parlare in modo più approfondito.
L’album si presenta come lo specchio della versione finlandese. Nessun cambiamento a livello sonoro, solo la lingua, che rende tutto molto più immediato e di ben più facile comprensione.
Non si tratta assolutamente di un concetto da sottovalutare: tradurre un album richiede una serie di operazioni con lo scopo di replicare le stesse sensazioni e le stesse immagini possibilmente con le stesse parole rispettando comunque metrica, tempo e ritmo. Senza contare il fatto che finlandese e inglese non fanno nemmeno parte dello stesso ceppo linguistico. Un lavoro non da poco, eppure Marko c’è riuscito.
Ciò che però rende speciale questo album non è solo il discorso linguistico. Parliamo di un lavoro solista in cui un artista ormai maturo e affermato riversa i suoi pensieri, le sue riflessioni e i suoi sentimenti.
La voce di Marko fa da padrona: si erge in modo imponente, è la struttura attorno a cui l’album è costruito e che sostiene le canzoni, creando un unico filo conduttore, capace di passare dai toni morbidi e leggeri di The Voice Of My Father a più potenti, quasi rabbiosi, di Stones a quelli più allegri di Runner Of The Railways.
Per quanto riguarda il genere, i fan dei Nightwish non rimarranno delusi. Non è esattamente il symphonic metal stile Holopainen a cui siamo abituati, ma troviamo comunque cenni orchestrali e delle linee di archi che conferiscono ai brani un tocco di familiarità. Le chitarre veloci, tastiere, sintetizzatori e batteria potente sono elementi imprescindibili in questo album donando solennità e quasi regalità ai singoli pezzi.
Si sente davvero che questo è stato un lavoro svolto con il cuore (forse è da qui che nasce l’ardore a cui si riferisce il titolo?), la passione e i sentimenti di Marko sono inequivocabili in ogni pezzo. Se dovessi scegliere il mio preferito direi senza dubbio Runner Of The Runways, per la sua allegria e per la musica che rimanda a brani come Élan e I Want My Tears Back, senza però risultarne una copia, mantenendo la propria unicità.
L’intimità che Marko ha voluto condividere con Pyre Of The Black Heart è stato un regalo molto apprezzato dal pubblico. È previsto anche un tour europeo, che purtroppo non toccherà il nostro Paese (con dispiacere nostro e di Marko stesso), ma siamo sicuri che sarà un successo. Tirando le somme, l’album è sicuramente un lavoro svolto minuziosamente, con una produzione eccellente e una consapevolezza musicale che traspare già dalla copertina. Possiamo dire che Marko è riuscito nel suo intento: confermarsi come artista individuale, senza le limitazioni di una band, dando sfogo alla sua vena compositiva, regalandoci un album capace di emozionare ed esseri fieri del nostro “vichingo” preferito

When we talk about a period of hiatus of a band, it does not mean that the group’s members sit back. A band like Nightwish, always full with ideas and projects, are not outdone.
Done with the Decades World Tour, some of the guys started some parallel projects. Tuomas and Troy, together with Johanna Kurkela, founded Auri, while Floor took part in the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers, getting lot of appreciations in her native country, giving her the chance to start her first solo tour.
However what generates fan’s interest was Marco for sure, who makes his first debut as a solo artist after more than 30 years of career.
Our favourite bassist and vocalist is very wide: Tarot, Nightwish and collaborations with Delain, Northern Kings, Raskasta Joulua, Ayreon and many others are just few of the stars in Hietala’s firmament.
But now it’s enough. It is time for Marco to be the Sun. The first thing to do is to get rid of that C in his name. People must be true to themselves, so the vocalist introduces himself with his first name: Marko Hietala. And so Mustan Sydämen Rovio was born, 10 original songs completely sung in Finnish language, anticipated by Isäni Ääni. The album wass released on May 2019 via Savonian Rooster label.
The LP gets excellent reviews and Marc… sorry, MARKO and his band start a little tour throughout Finland.
Just at the end of this tour, here it comes the plot twist: the album will be available in its English version, called Pyre Of The Black Heart, from 2020.
And I would like to talk about this specific version.
The album shows itself like the mirror of its Finnish version. There are no changes in the sound, only the language, which makes everything immediate and easily understandable.
This is not something to underestimate at all: translating an album requires a series of operation with the purpose to repeat the same feelings and the same pictures, possibly with the same words, however following metric, tempo and rhythm. Do not forget that Finnish and English do not belong to the same linguistic family. A hard work, isn’t it? But Marko achieved his aim.
What makes this album special is not only the linguistic topic. We are talking of a solo work by a mature and popular artist where he puts his thoughts, reflections and feelings.
Marko’s voice rules the roost: it raises majestic, it is the ground where the album has built up and supports the songs, creating a unique common thread, capable of going from softer and lighter tunes of The Voice Of My Father to more powerful, almost angry, of Stones, to the happier of Runner Of The Railways.
Concerning the genre, Nightwish fans will not be disappointed. It’s not Holopainen’s symphonic metal we are used to, but we can find some orchestral vibes and some strings lines, which give a familiarity touch to the songs. Fast guitars, keyboards, synths, and powerful drums are essential in this album giving solemnity and almost majesty to the single pieces.
People can really feel the heart involved in this work (maybe is this that gives birth to the warmth the title refers to?), Marko’s passion and feelings are unequivocal in every song. If I had to choose my favourite one, I would say, no doubt indeed, Runner Of The Runways, for its happiness and the music that reminds to songs like Élan and I Want My Tears Back, without being a copycat, keeping its unicity.
The intimacy that Marko wanted share with Pyre Of The Black Heart was gift much appreciated by the audience. A European tour is upcoming, but unfortunately no dates in our country are expected (with a big disappointment from us and Marko as well), but we are sure it will be successful.
Taking stock, the album is of course a meticulous work, with an excellent production and a very deep musical knowledge which already shines through the artwork. We can say that Marko succeeded in his purpose: confirm himself as a solo artist, without any band restriction, pouring out his songwriting, giving us an album able to move and be proud of our favorite Viking.
