ENGLISH VERSION

We are talking about an ambitious project, but it seems that Tuomas is now familiar with ‘impossible missions’. At least apparently impossible.

And he succeeded once again. Tuomas, with his first solo project, is able to thrill and seduce the listeners.

As the title clearly says, we are referring to ‘The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck’ graphic novel, written by Don Rosa: this is one of book which mostly inspired the finnish composer. This is time though, the creative process revolves around the book itself, and the result is stunning.

What makes this album unique is for sure the great multiplicity and the use of a wide range of instruments to recreate sceneries and situations. Also the listener who has not read the original story will find him-herself into Don Rosa’s realm.

Troy Donockley, Johanna Kurkela and Tony Kakko, are the main guest musicians, who joined their forces to give life to this project, living in Tuomas’ mind since years. Thanks to them, it’s almost tangible the story, both with his melancholic and happy traits.

It’s important to notice that the vocal parts doesn’t overwhelm the songs but they just create a frame, giving thus great space to the music.

Nightwish influence can be heard, but without arriving to something really symphonic: we can heard an echo of the last two albums, especially for the orchestra and the choirs (for instance in Cold Heart of the Klondike or The Last Sled).

There are also some ‘classic’ soundtrack inspirations, as in Goodbye Papa, in which Micheal Nyman example is almost blatant.

Changes in rhythm are powerful and never boring: they give the listener a whirl of pathos and emotions.

Overall, it’s not an easy album, it will never be heard on radio, and maybe this is something positive. You will need more than one listen to fully catch the essence of this work, a work composed in a lifetime.

What Holopainen propose us is something different from Nightwish, something fresh and new. It’s probably out from the Nightwish boundaries we are used to, but we can also enjoy a comic and childish side, typical of the maestro.
